Instructions for Sedation Patients

Oral Sedation Care Instructions

  • DO eat and drink as usual.  
  • DO NOT drink any alcoholic beverage or take certain medications for twelve (12) hours before the procedure and for twenty-four (24) hours after the procedure. 
  • DO wear loose fitting clothing. 
  • DO take all of your prescribed medications as instructed by your physician with a small amount of water unless instructed otherwise. 
  • DO use an inhaler, if you typically use an inhaler to treat asthma or any respiratory conditions. Please bring the inhaler with you to all appointments. 
  • DO coordinate a responsible adult (18 years of age or older) to drive the patient home from the appointment. If the sedation medication is consumed before arriving at the office, the escort must also drive the patient TO the appointment. 
    • The escort must arrive with the patient, remain at the office unless otherwise instructed.  
    • The responsible adult must remain with the patient and observe the patient until the effects of the sedation have worn off. 
    • Minors (under 18 years of age) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. 
  • DO NOT operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery for twenty-four (24) hours following the procedure.

Care Instructions-IV Conscious Sedation

  • DO NOT eat any solid foods or drink opaque liquids for six (6) hours before your procedure. You may have a small amount of water up to two (2) hours before the appointment. 
  • DO NOT drink any alcoholic beverage, smoke cigarettes or take certain medications for twelve (12) hours before the procedure and for twenty-four (24) hours after the procedure. 
  • DO wear loose fitting clothing. 
  • DO coordinate a responsible adult (18 years of age or older) to escort the patient home from the appointment. The escort must arrive with the patient, remain at the office unless otherwise instructed, and must drive the patient home.  The responsible adult must remain with the patient and observe the patient until the effects of the sedation have worn off. 
    • Minors (under 18 years of age) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. 
  • DO NOT operate a motor vehicle or heavy machinery for twenty-four (24) hours following the procedure.
